What is Sex Therapy?

Sex therapy is similar to any other type of psychotherapy in which problems, challenges and perplexities are explored, processed, discussed and treated in great depth. The primary difference is that these problems and perplexities hold sex, intimacy and relationships at their core. Sex therapy is approached from a multidimensional, biopsychosocial lens. This means that it encompasses the biological, psychological, sociocultural, and interpersonal aspects of a person’s sexuality. Sex therapy may focus on:

  1. Problems related to sexual functioning (e.g., painful intercourse, difficulties reaching orgasm, premature ejaculation, erectile difficulties, etc.)

  2. Impulsive or compulsive sexual behaviour (e.g., sex addiction)

  3. Concerns about sexual pleasure, desire and arousal (e.g., desire discrepancy between partners, etc.)

  4. Erotic interests, kinks and fetishes (e.g,. BDSM, cuckolding, etc.)

  5. Thoughts, behaviours, feelings, perceptions, values and attitudes around sex (e.g., consent, masturbation, pornography, myths, guilt/shame, consensual non-monogamy, etc.)

  6. Sexual orientation and identity (e.g, gay/lesbian, transgender male/female)

  7. Unwanted, abusive and/or traumatic sexual experiences (e.g., childhood sexual abuse, rape, etc.)

  8. Experience with infidelity

  9. Concerns about intimacy (i.e., emotional or physical)

  10. Relationship conflict

Individual Sex Therapy

Our sexual health begins on an individualistic and personal level. Sex therapy can help you accept and embrace your sexuality, overcome problems associated with your independent sexual functioning, and work through dysfunctional and painful memories associated with sex, intimacy and relationships. I’m here to help you reclaim your sexuality as it relates to you individually and within your relationships.

Relationship Sex Therapy

Most often, relationships get to a point in which the partners feel frustrated, disappointed, disengaged, stuck and hopeless before reaching out to a therapist for help. They come with both sexual and non-sexual problems that seem perpetual and unresolved. Whether you’re in a monogamous, polyamorous or open relationship, problems related to sex, communication, connectedness, and intimacy can and do arise. Sex therapy can help work through these types of relationship challenges while rediscovering intimacy, pleasure and satisfaction between the partners. No matter the issues brought to therapy, I’m here to support you through the tough times as relationships are resilient and there’s always hope.
